HURRICANE MITCH 1998
30 Deaths, 50 missing and more than 30 thousand affected as a result of the Mitch Hurricane that hit El Salvador last night.....At least 30 people have died in the eastern part of the country and some 50 continue to be missing due to the hurricane tat hit last night and last Friday.
The main damages of the Hurricane the storm has caused the National Emergency Committee (COEN) to declare a National Emergency for El Salvador. This makes it possible for the COEN to utilize government resources to assist and help the population affected by the hurricane. 25 victims lost their lives in the hacienda Vieja del Cantón Chilanguera when their living areas were washed away by the Río Grande river in San Miguel. Two other people died under medical treatment in the Hospital Centro of San Miguel and another in Lourdes, La Libertad.The victims in Chilanguera were 5 young children and 12 adults. They were surprised early in the morning by a swift and deep current of water that was a produced by heavy rainfall that fell the night before near the Honduran border.
The victims were as follows, Rudy Alexander Cabrera, tree years; Manuel de Jesús Quinteros, 10; María Raquel Quinteros Márquez, 7; Ezequiel Quinteros Márquez, 7; Glenda Esmeralda Rivera, 7; Olga Ernestina Arévalo, 6; José Pedro Machado,4; Gilma Aracely Turcios, 13; Ezequiel Antonio Márquez,9; Otilia Romero, 45; Gregoria Lara; Ana Eva Flores, 39; and Manfredy Portillo, 9. Other victims are: José Servellón, 5 years old; and Fidel Cabrera Quinteros; y Rosario Pineda. Another three victims died in the area of Caserío El Gavilán, jurisdiction of El Carmen, La Unión, where a giant wall fell on two homes.

This storm and flooding isolated the areas between La Union and San Miguel and made it impossible for rescue workers to mobilize to help stranded people in La Unión from the department of San Miguel. It also flooded the Pan-American highway making it impossible for rescue teams to move from San Salvador to La Union where the Barrio Concepcion has been totally flooded. The governor of San Miguel, Mario Bettaglio confirms that there has been 25 victims in Chirilagua, and 5 in in El Carmen. In Chinandega, Health promoter, Maria Aminta Mercado says that there were more than 500 living areas that were swept away in the caseríos of Hacienda Vieja, El Chilar, y Nuevo Mundo. She mentioned, "There have been numerous families that have disappeared, a whole family of 13 members were swept away in there house in the community of Los Rivas."
