At the start of February, Dr. Margarita Orellana of Comandos de Salvamento was participating in a health brigade when the unit received an emergency call in Berlin Usulután. An assault with a Machete had taken place. The doctors, medical director Rosa Mendea, and EMTs offered first aid to patients in order to assure their airways, control breathing and monitor their vitals. They monitored level of consciousness during transport.
Dra. Orellana explains:
We arrived to Berlin and found the patients, both in a state of being inebriated. They had gotten into an altercation together with a machete. One presented with a fractured skull, multiple lacerations on his arms. We applied a pressure dressing but due to the injury being very acute, we transported to Santiago de Maria Hospital. Of course we brought the other patient with us since he presented very inebriated. It was difficult to acquire the other patients collaboration since he did not want to travel in the same ambulance as his supposed “amigo”. Eventually both arrived safe at the hospital.
